This just in...Rogue Island won the Edgar Award for best first novel! I had a lot of fun reading this first novel by journalist Bruce DeSilva, husband of poet Patricia Smith whom he slyly mentions as he includes one of her poems. Cute! Mulligan, the protagonist, is the familiar rebellious type. A fanatical Boston sports fan, he drinks too much, works too hard, abhors the bosses who pay his salary, wisecracks and is seduced by beautiful women, one of whom...well, that would spoil things. Another spoiler would to tell you the meaning of the title. I will say that the setting, Providence, R.I., would give Atlantic City a run for its money in the corruption department or Department of Corruption. Ha. Ha. Rumor has it that DeSilva and Smith are teaming up to write a sequel. I'm sure it will be hot.
