I watched the movie a few days ago before I picked up the book, and though I've seen it several times, I still hadn't had a chance to read the book. I'm so glad that I finally made the decision to read it. The movie approached some scenes differently and things were included or excluded. But, the feeling of the story and the message is definitely presented the same way. I really felt protective of Melinda reading her story, same as in the movie, having her deal with everything all on her own at such a young age. She is actually very funny and sarcastic, and definitely with losing all of her friends, had to deal with so much alone. It is a tough subject to talk about, but the story as told, is done beautifully. I only wish the movie had given a bigger part to the Ivy character, because she made a bigger impact to me in the book. I can't understand why this would ever be a banned book? For the sometimes ver minor profanity? For the fact that she was only 13? I think every person can take away something from this book, and hope this book continues to get into the hands of young people.
