Some might find it odd that a book of such honesty and depth could be penned by a sixteen year-old; I think that anyone older would be scarcely qualified. Hinton's youth is The Outsiders's biggest boon. An adult might have produced a better-written novel, but it would have lacked the exuberance, innocence, and deep understanding of character that permeates every page. The Outsiders is a national treasure, as is its author.
