This isn't the Mortal Instruments trilogy and probably should have been marketed differently. The book has its strengths and its weaknesses, but the ending will cause readers to either hate the book or love it. I can't decide what I feel. I'm angry at Jace. I'm angry at Clary. I'm angry at Alec. Everyone seems to have made so many stupid mistakes. This is really one of those books you will need to step away from for a day or two if you're a fan. Many critics questioned whether continuing the story with these new plot twists somehow devalues the original trilogy and I think they're valid concerns. The plot twist didn't have the usual zing that Clare is known to deliver when shocking us with new information. I loved Clockwork Angel and the previous Mortal Instruments. I know she can write. And yes, some of it was predictable, but I still am not sure where she is taking the next two books. The real question is if characters will have redemption and if they will be in control of their emotions by book six. Otherwise, criticism that the characters acted differently will be validated. However, I have enough confidence in Clare that she will prove all her critics wrong.

Great non-fiction work on hip hop and gang culture in Los Angeles in the 1990s.
