Historical fiction tells of the life of the girls of the Pieta, where Vivaldi was the musical director and girls received the finest musical training in Europe. Beautifully illustrated by the author.

Steinbeck writes the gold of the summer California hills right onto the page. I challenge any reader to finish this book and try not to love like Sam Hamilton, be otherwise like Adam Trask, listen and judge like Lee, or feel as rawly as Cal. Whereas some books are truly delicious like sushi--rich, invigorating, biteable--East of Eden is savory, like the 3 or 4 hour long meal you spend around the table with your family and most meaningful friends. Afterwards you're thoroughly sated and utterly intoxicated. Do not inhale this book--slowly sift and chew. It's one of three in my life that has made me actively change the way I live and go through the world.

This is a book every aspiring author should read - and in this translation. I've been meaning to read this ever since I heard the story of Flaubert's comma. I wish I'd read it 20 years ago. A master class in writing detail! Flaubert's comma: Flaubert labored at his writing desk through the morning. At lunch, his house guest asked how the work was going. Flaubert answered, "Good, I added a comma." After lunch he went back to work, and labored through the afternoon. At dinner his guest asked the same question, and Flaubert answered, "I removed the comma."
