Terra is a shy teen with a port wine stain across one of her cheeks. Ready to burst out of her sleepy hometown in Washington to escape her emotionally and verbally abusive father and start her life, she is stymied when told she cannot go to the college of her choice and may have to deviate from her “life map”. Then she meets Jacob, a Chinese boy with a facial abnormality of his own. Together they travel with their mothers to China, where Terra (and her mother) learn about beauty and themselves to find inner strength. This is a beautifully written book, interwoven with interesting references and descriptions to maps and directions and fascinating descriptions of China. The story was interesting enough, although I wasn’t as crazy about it as other people.
