Say "butler" and I, of course, think, "Mr. Belvedere" -- that is, I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this (the back cover description gave me thankfully little to go on, and I haven't seen the movie), and it completely blew me away. What I felt was missing from Never Let Me Go was entirely present here. Mr. Stevens and Never Let Me Go's Kathy H. aren't so dissimilar in their awareness (or lack thereof) of their environments and their places in them. But I somehow felt Mr. Stevens more convincing and compelling in how very human he was and how he seemed to fight against the notion (well, admitting to having an opinion or a feeling about anything, anyway). It's best to go into this expecting nothing, so I won't say more than I've said already. Be prepared for nothing much to happen, but damn if this isn't just fantastically subtle, beautiful, pretty close to perfect.
