Read this overseas when I was studying abroad, left it in a "take a book, leave a book" bin at a youth hostel. Boring, pretty silly and unecessary romance built around too many cliched plot devices.
You rarely hear this, but the movie was better. If I had read this first, I might have liked it better, but after seeing the movie, it wasn't very interesting.
Any book by Larry Brown is certain to be a damn fine read, and this was no exception, especially since it was dedicated to his dog. These vignettes of the life of a Oxford (Mississippi, that is) firefighter leaving behind his chosen occupation for a literary life are written very well. A pleasure to read.
