This series of books is the scifi/fantasy equivalent of Cheetos - cheesy and puffy and probably not very good for you - but I liked it. Planetary colonists find that the neighborhood has a nasty streak in the form of a quasi-magical, nocturnal miasma called the fae that messes with their technology and literally scares them to death. Over the next few millenia, some people figure out how to manipulate it, but they're outcasts since the local church's hard line is that it's sinful to mess with the fae (even as they secretly train some of their own sorcerers to do so, one of whom is the protagonist, Damien). The most interesting character is the local villain, Tarrant, one of those uber-elegant dark sorcerer types who's Eeeeevil (like the frooits of the deeeeevil!) but also secretly tortured about the nasty, vivisecting-of-family type stuff he did to earn his eeeeevil superpowers. Complications ensue, grudging alliances and new enemies are made, yada yada yada. It's all total cookie-cutter fantasy stuff, pieces of which can be cut and pasted alongside any of a number of other fantasy franchises; but these books were an easy read, and thanks to my older brother Mark and all the Tolkien, McCaffery and Heinlein he lobbed at my head growing up, I was patterned at an early age to dig this crap - so there it is.

Fun chick lit! Set in the UK which makes it seem slightly more fun. I don't think Brits believe that alcoholism is a problem.
