The language is intriging and the character development practical. Edgar pulls you along into his journey. Not a book for those who need a happy ending.

Rather self-consciously twee. Maybe I'm too old for it - it's intended for young readers - but I think the real problem is that it's meant to be in the vein of Pratchett or Gaiman, and doesn't quite come off. And footnotes - ! I know they're in right now, thanks to Susanna Clarke, but even in Terry Pratchett's capable hands, footnotes can get wearisome. And this is not Discworld. There are touches of cleverness or humor that I liked, and the science is well-enough written to satisfy me, a complete layman. But the story itself could have been better.
