Perhaps one of the earliest Science Fiction Dystopian novels, Zamyatin's "WE" has remained largely unheard-of except in literary circles due to its age. First published between 1919-1921 and hand-circulated by mimeograph copies, it was never professionally published until 1924 in English and then much later in Czech. It's first publication in the country where it was written, Russia, had to wait until 1988. Fans of dystopian fiction will recognize many tropes of the genre that later authors have used and re-used, but reading one of the founding influences of the genre is fascinating, to say the least. Not only is "WE" well-written and interesting as a narrative, the pacing, thought-process of the main character and the visualization of a possible future are all breathtaking. In many ways, "WE" reminds the reader of the silent film "Metropolis," with its masses of population working as machinery for the state and reduced to numbers, cogs in a wheel, without individuality. I would suggest this novel for anyone of literary or science fiction tastes.
