Originally, this book was recommended to me by a friend after a discussion about "kids" books. So I went into the reading expecting something more Harry-Potteresque. To my surprise (and yes I like Harry Potter, but for different reasons than this trilogy) I delved into a world much darker and more mysterious. A world where children must grow up far too quickly, and where adults can not be trusted to protect you. I would liken this series more closely to CS Lewis's Narnia series, if I had to make a comparison. An intriguing story!

I enjoyed this but it didn't bowl me over in the way that I thought it would. I really, really warmed to the character of Miriam. In fact, I would say that it is her story that makes this book worth reading. However, I found the ending a bit too neat. It was as if the author really wanted to deliver a happy ending and for me this undermined the realism of the story

Good book - get's a little long-winded, but I recommend.
