Recommended to me by Bro Tricky, when I asked him, he being the authority, what three or four books I should read on the American Civil War. This title in particular came highly recommended, as the premier single volume history of the war, as well as the few decades preceding it. By the time I'd read only a few chapters, I could tell that the recommendation was a good one. The writing is lively and informative, thorough without being tiresome. I greatly enjoyed reading this book, not only to satisfy my questions and curiosity, but also simply on its own merit as an engaging work of history. A few times I did find myself musing on what a Boy Book it is, and it does go on sometimes at a bit of length as to the tactical developments of a large number of battles. But mixed in with that factor Mr. McPherson also plots political and social developments in the Union and Confederacy, among statesmen and citizens, which are truly compelling. True, it is about 900 pages long, the kind of book you could defend yourself with in the case of home invasion, but I found it so well written that it melted away and flew by in great chunks.
