It is an uncomfortable and touchy topic for many people, so if the word "vagina" sets you off, then you best be prepared to be bombarded with vagina and other female genitalia throughout the book. I'm just saying, if the title hasn't floored you yet. :) For me, I haven't quite grasped at the idea of seeing your vagina as your pride and joy, much less using it to empower you or nurturing it lovingly. Different people have their own views and own comfort levels with embracing their private parts. Personally, I don't think I can get used to said ideas, but it was truly eye-opening and informative to read about the stories and experiences of other women. The monologues can be rather funny, descriptive, and tragic at times. But it was the spotlight monologues that really struck me. They dealt with serious matters that were very moving and grave. For example, I did not know about the Comfort women and how thousands upon thousands of them were abducted and forced to sexually relieve Japanese soldiers during WW2. It's hard-breaking to hear about such atrocities that aren't talked about more often. And in this 10th anniversary edition, you get to learn about V-Day and its impact around the world (V-Day, being a global movement to end violence against women and children). But what, might you ask, does V-Day and the Vagina Monologues have to do with each other? Well, Eve Ensler, the person who interviewed around 200 women and compiled their stories into what is the Vagina Monologues, is also the same person who founded V-Day. She uses this play to get the message across through V-Day on ending violence against women. And because of this, it has grown substantially into an important and pressing movement. So yeah. It was an interesting read that, I think, you should at least try and read at some point. You will definitely learn a few things about vaginas and what it means for others to have one!
