Remember the film, Amadeus, back in the 80's? This is the play upon which it was based. The play is great. Although it is difficult to differentiate between fact and fiction in this historical drama, the themes of jealousy and greatness are really underlined through the historical tweaks Peter Shaffer commits. Shaffer wrote the screenplay for the film, as well, and if you really want to get a sense of the music that is such an important part of the play, see the film. Interestingly enough, the ending of the current edition of the play was written by Shaffer after he wrote the screenplay. Apparently there are 5 or 6 different endings that Shaffer has written, and if you go to a used bookstore, you may be able to get an earlier edition of the play with a different ending from the film and the current version. I did this by accident, but it was fortunate. An interesting comparison between them.
