This book advocates democracy in the classroom. bell hooks, known for her views on race and gender, encourages teacher to think about the choices they make in the classroom. Above all, she stresses freedom in the classroom - freedom to think critically and make good choices - sounds a bit constructivist by nature.
It took me a long time to warm up to main character, Clara. I thought the descriptions of the procedures in making the lamps and panels were interesting but sometimes hard to imagine and therefore too detailed. I enjoyed the time period of the book such as when Alice and Clara took their first ride on the brand new subway system. Overall I liked it-some parts more than others.
Big, fat EEEHHHHHH. I can see how Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser get up to lots of fun adventures and things, but this was the set up about how the boys met and became friends, and it was generally kind of boring. Also, all the female characters were annoying and CLEARLY holding back the heroes. I really wanted Vlana and Ivrian to run away and be lesbians together, but instead they were eaten by rats, which was less satisfying.
