I agree that this genre, when done well, is a wonderful way to introduce children to, and give them an appreciation for, history (especially useful when the topics are this dark). The grounding in truth gives kids a real spark about reading it too. Number the Stars touches the subject of the Nazis and what happened to the Jews in Denmark- but with hope, and with a successful survival ending. I think setting it in Denmark, away from Germany, gave it the credibility without the intensity and tradgedy that describing the actions in Germany would demand. I discussed this book with some 9 year olds. Most had not discussed Nazis before, and were only aware that Hitler was a very bad man. The dog sniffing for the escaping Jews was very intriguing. One's focus though, was beyond the history or plot- it was on the fact the parents lie to their daughter to protect her. He couldn't comprehend that.
