I don't like non-fiction at all, so I attempted to read this against my better judgment. While the ideas presented are thought-provoking and the writing style is impressive, reading it just felt like homework and I've been out of college too long. If I was doing it for course credit and a grade, I'm sure I would have thought it was the best elective ever, but it's just not what I want to read for pleasure. I made it over a third of the way through the book before I gave up, but I did continue to attend the book club's meetings through the end of the book. Listening to other people discuss the book was more rewarding than actually reading it.
i'm sure if i had read this as a little girl, i would have adored it. as an adult, i could not help finding it oh so outdated in so many parts. all the moralizing, the religious blabber, antiquated values, ......sigh. i certainly dont think this is a "timeless" story. but other than that, the sisters' games and interactions and the way the family sticks together, all that was a lot of fun to read about!
