Another one of the fabulous Inspector Chen mysteries, that are distinguished by the portraits of present-day Shanghai, the lingering ghosts of Mao and the hardships of the Cultural revolution, the still-present dominance of the in-crowd in the face of rampant capitalism, and the gentle background whispers of ancient Chinese poems
If you are interested in a book about some upper middle class jerk who neglects his wife and son so he can live a vain life centered around his Great-Gatsby-like friendship with some corrupt guy, then this book is for you. Unfortunately, none of that appealed to me. Really, I found this book to be rather lacking in terms of plot, conflict and character development of everyone except the main character. To make matters worse, this book is incredibly dull.
David Sedaris is a good writer and I enjoyed most of his life snippits; however, there was no hope of him getting any more than 3 stars since I read him after Steinbeck's "East of Eden." I am reading "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim" though, so that should indicate that I enjoyed "Me Talk Pretty." My favorite chapters were the crosswords one and the IQ story, mostly because Sedaris is a successful author but is able to admit his IQ is less than "the weight of some cats." Very nice.
This book started out with such promise, but I got bored about half way through, made it to three quarters and then bailed. Hope I didn't miss a surprise ending.
Oh! This one was so sweet and romantic and...sweet. Okay, so the characters were definitly too good to be true...but hey, ones an angel for goodness sake ;) The plot was very light on, but it's a short story and sometimes you don't want heavy battles against evil and the weight of the world. A quick overview : Noah, a Guardian Angel has observed and guided millions of souls, but his Sweet One (Micah) is special. Micah, a kindergarten teacher, is a wonderful man, but he's alone. His relationships never seems to work out...no one can measure up to his memory of the angel that watched over him as a child. A near fatal accident brings things to a head when Noah breaks all the rules and saves Micah. But by saving Micah he believes he had condemed himself. Overall, a really nicely written short story just perfect for a weary soul...when all you want is a good old fashioned HEA with lots of heart.
