Set in Victorian times (1876), a time of prudishness and hypocrisy with at least an attempt by Queen Victoria to instill morality in marriage, it is an unusual approach to both the Sleeping Beauty tale and to historical romance. The lady of the book is older than the male and was a former French courtesan. The male is a geologist and explorer just returned from Africa. Neither comes from the upper class of England, and yet both have made or are in the process of making their fortunes. A thoroughly enjoyable book in many ways.
