A decent read, but not very inspiring. Something so standoffish and disengaged runs a risk, but every word was a treat so I kept going. I do not feel particularly enriched now. The lack of development-over-time of the characters is made up for by a steadfast stubborness in reinforcing their basic characteristics. Sounds boring, but it was a delightful boring. Would rather read something more interesting written in this delightful way.
The worst history textbook that I have ever read. I was incredibly disappointed when I had to read this for my class. I never want to see this book again. Please ignore if you are a history teacher, pick a different book.

This is probably my favorite book. And even if it's not, it's what I say to everyone when they ask what my favorite book is. I don't even know what to say about it. It's amazing. It's about blackness in opposition to the white supremacist beauty standard, it's about the concept of the black nuclear family, it's about class, it's about sex, it's about abuse of all kinds. It's amazing.
