I adored this novel. I adored Rubashov and the devil. The not quite fleshed out investigation of time and memory was thought provoking. It was a rumination on the fictitious nature of historical recollection and the personal narratives we weave, and on the capacity for man to err or excel dramatically. I highly recommend this novel for those whose like a bit history, aren't afraid of atrocities, and are interested in seeing the idea of a life immortal ironed out to the nth degree.
for school,.
Beginning in about 1997, I would read this every single summer -- it posed the cause/effect argument for my "fits of the sullens." Whatever. I will always love this book, kind of in the same way i love Dundee Honey Brown -- it's not great, but it's pretty good and it goes fast. It's good for what ails you. Also, comparisons between male genitalia & turkey necks = excellent.
