When I read this in high school, I found it deeply moving and related strongly to Holden. When I read it again in college, I thought, "God, will you just go say hi to [insert name of the What-If girl here] and quit whining about it already?" Still like it, but might not have if I hadn't have read it it at the right stage of life.

** spoiler alert ** Alright... If I said I cried a lot, that would be a hell of an understatement. From the first moment I fell in love with Scott. And I wasn't prepared for his death, even if I already knew it would happen from the blurb... Then I felt for Mike. Death of the loved one is something very difficult to deal with. And no matter who you are, it always screwed your life to the point you look at suicide as the only way the pain could stop. It shows the precious moments of time, when someone is on the edge of the decision to take his own life. And at the same time shows Mike's strength and will to live by hanging onto the closest person, in this case Paul. I think this book is absolutely amazingly written. I loved Scott. And then I loved Paul for his understanding. So 5 stars. :)

Scientists race against time as a rogue virus mutates (amazingly quickly). It is easy to be lulled by the mix of technical jargon and descriptions of containment units into thinking that this is actually an intelligent read, but it doesn't really rise above the run-of-the-mill thriller. Still, I consider it one of the mildly better Crichtons.
