** spoiler alert ** Probably deserves a 4.25. Wonderfully written story about life in Iran, and the societal and governmental problems that shape everyone's lives. Pasha, a young teenage boy, falls head over in heels love with his neighbor, Zari. Of course she is already engaged to Doctor.... but let's just say that doesn't work out. Pasha goes through many challenges in his young life, lands in a mental asylum and eventually leaves for the US to fulfill his/his family's dreams. The Shah is a hated ruler and the USA is viewed as a contributor to the country's hardships. Many interesting persepectives in this book. I especially love how they describe love and gender roles in their society.
