Good Book. Quick Read. Enjoyed the storyline for what it was - pure amusement.
Did I mention that I read every Jules Verne book when I was a kid? Every single one? At least that's what it felt like, and, wait, taking a short look at his bibliography, yes, I probably DID read every single one of them. I was HUGE fan. (and an obsessed collector. Not much has changed since then). In hindsight, all I can say about this book, without doubt one of THE classics of literature, is that I would have enjoyed it even more if the Pierce Brosnan movie had already been made then. Good books are always better when the main characters are pretty like that. ;-) Just kidding, I loved the book. It has every right to be the classic that it is, and everyone should read it.
This is the best book I read in 2010- I loved Russo's other books: particularly Straight Man, Nobody's Fool, - I didn't care much for Empire Falls. I love his John Irvingesque New England style (throw in a wrestling coach and a bear on a unicycle and some of his early works could probably pass as Irving). This sat on my stack awhile- and when I finally got into it- I went in with lower expectations after not liking empire falls- and I was wonderfully surprised by a winding tale with heart- and conflict- and many characters I cared so deeply about at the end of the book- I didn't want it to end.
