Wells' Time Machine was one of the first stories to link time travel with science rather than magic or spiritualism. Plus his depiction of the underground-dwelling, industrial Morlocks and the willowy, surface-dwelling hippie Eloi shaped the way many people imagined the future for the next several decades.
To be discussed at Powells Beaverton SF group on Tuesday Feb 8 at 7pm. When I reread a favorite book, there is sometimes a slight moment (and sometimes more than a moment) of dread wondering if the book will be the same book as I remembered it. Because who I am when I read a book changes my experience of that book. So it was nice to reread Replay and if anything like it more. I had forgotten how much of the book takes place in Atlanta (even if it was Atlanta from the 60's rather than the 80's) and therefore was surprisingly recognizable. But I hadn't forgotten the flavor of the book, endless possibilities at least somewhat under our own control. 5 of 5.
