The prose is Terrific in this book. It's a portrait of a miser, although the title is his daughter's name. Set in france during the early 1800's (in the time it was written), it's amazingly modern in its view of cut-throat capitalism (am I being redundant here?) and materialism's pervading influence on society. It also has some very modern and still very accurate views on small town vs. big city life and mores. Although it's a tragedy I wasn't heartbroken at the end. The characters are all fleshed out, but kept at arm's length. It's more about miserliness and it's far reaching effects.
