A bit uneven, considering how quickly it sometimes jumps between recreating entire scenes worth of dialogue that supposedly happened verbatim and moving suddenly into pages-long explanations of plant toxins. That said, the controversy over the truth of the book seems over-inflated. Davis' claims come off sounding perfectly reasonable and not nearly so melodramatic as some of the detractors suggest. Better if read more as an examination of religious traditions in Haiti and less of a horror story or an attempt to provide some kind of a scientific rationale for the supernatural.
