A true and heartbreaking tale of the human capability to endure. It is definitely a must-read. I loved it how she included some descriptions about Hongkong and China in general. I was enlightened.
This is a really thought-provoking book. Kevin Roose spends his "semester abroad" at Liberty University, the ultra-evangelical institution of "higher learning" founded by Jerry Falwell. For most of us in the secular world, this would be a more foreign experience than studying in any other country. Students are required to take classes in evangelism, short-history creationism (the 6000 year variety), and the rules are stifling. But at the same time Roose finds that there are some things that are comforting about prayer & he makes some good friends. It humanizes evangelical Christians, but sometimes I think Roose is too soft on them. Yes, the evangelists are only doing what they've been taught to do, and they seem to do it in a selfless spirit, but hating gays & repressing women should not be overlooked.
