After starting this book and putting it down 18 months ago while on vacation, I devoured it this week! While it does start off rather slowly, once it starts picking up there is no stopping! I tend to give books a chance in the first 100 pages, if I'm not hooked after 100 pages I put it down. I was told to keep reading this book, and I'm very glad. Once finished, I spoke with my aunt about it. She said the theme of sexual subvesidy throughout was somewhat bothersome to her. She didn't like that it was considered OK or normal to be having casual sex and affairs. I thought maybe this author has finaly shown the world how we really are?!?!?! A great book, can't wait to read the next one!
A quick and easy read. it's funny and great for children. Four stars for a children's book, and three stars if your an adult and wanna read it for pleasure. Will read this with my children one day (when I have them)! Someday, but no time soon! Just don't tell my wife! ;)
Let me say that I am a huge fan of old adventure movies, one of my favourites has been Beau Geste (’39 with Gary Cooper, Robert Preston and Ray Milland). The source book has been on the “Get to read list” for a very long time, thanks to my wife’s thoughtful gift of a Nook last Christmas, I’ve been slowly popping off some of the classics on that list. If you have a Nook or a Kindle, I would advise you don’t get the lowest price version of this classic. The text was so filled with typos it was difficult to determine whether I was reading French (which I neither speak nor read) or some horrendous spelling typo errors. Frankly, it the copy was so bad that it really diminished my enjoyment of the story. On its own the story is terrific! It was all that I could ask for. Being as familiar with the story as I am, the novel still held surprises for me.
