cute.
This is a book difficult to find the words to review. It is Steinbeck's best work. In his own words, he had always hidden a little bit of himself from his works (including the 'Grapes of Wrath'), ultimately, he suspected, so that he could write 'East of Eden' - the book for which he said "[he]...held nothing back." A revision of the story of Cain and Abel, as lived through the lives of Salinas Valley ranchers at the closing of the 19th century. This is the greatest work by the best American writer of the 20th century.
One of Moore's earlier short story collections, but very good, as always. The final story, "Like Life," is bizarre for Moore -- set in a post-apocalyptic 1990s -- but retains her inimitable, hopeful cynicism. "Pre-cancer? Isn't that, like, life?"
