I didn't really read all of Hamlet. I remember that the weekend I was supposed to read it was a particularly starry-eyed weekend after a dance. I was far too busy day dreaming about my crush to get into depressing Hamlet. However, what I did read and pick up in class, I liked. I remember that I wrote a paper on this one and Merchant of Venice, and I got a very good grade on it. Although impressed that I pulled that off, I still felt a little guilty at tricking my teacher.
I was goaded into reading this after finishing Rebecca and hearing of Bronte's influence on that novel. I was expecting a melodramatic heroine as depicted in Bronte's contemporaries'. However, Jane is actually pretty even tempered. Her situation is much more hysterionic than she. I also enjoyed the passages where she engages her suitors in conversations about relationships. She's a very good advocate for herself. She doesn't cower under the priviledges that they have due to their gender and social station. She takes them on toe-to-toe. Some of the minor characters are quite distorted by excesses, providing some real entertainment. But the main character does a good job with being well rounded and nuanced.
