I really enjoyed this well-researched and thoughtfully written treatise about the "miracle of freedom". As someone who has taken my freedoms for granted, this really made me stop and think. Freedom really is a blessing and a very high price has been paid for it throughout centuries. It made me appreciate and understand freedom more. There are things worth fighting for. I wish I had had the background on this book when I was teaching world civilizations. I think it would have helped my perspective and given me some very useful background knowledge. This is written in both a factual and a narrative style. It will help readers who, like me, don't usually read non-fiction books.
I read a fair amount of Steinbeck in school, but was never asked to read this one, so I read it on my own. It was a fast and easy read, but didn't lack on character or content to think about. Overall, I didn't like this one as much as some of the others, but I liked the relationship between George and Lennie and the ending. Even though these elements now have been duplicated in other places and might no longer appear original to new readers, it didn't feel that way for me when I read it.
