Definitely a page turner. Historical novel set in 1944 and 1995. Alternating chapters tell the story of resistance fighters in Holland and a 15 yr old's search for an explanation for her grandfather's suicide.
I just love Scarlett Thomas's big weird books. Every single one. This is probably the one most in line with my own preoccupations - writing, reading, narrative structure, or the lack thereof, the true nature of reality, female friendships. It's great. I love the way the narrative kind of meanders along, the space she allows for ideas to emerge and evolve. Just, all of it.
Yes, it's a textbook, but a very readable one. Of course, I loved this era of history anyways.
