I read this several years ago (and thought, how have they not made a movie????) and recently craved a re-read - well I could not put it down and liked it even more this time around. It is one of the most outstanding books - beautifully written with breathtaking sentences, characters that are so well drawn, conflicts that are incredibly developed. I enjoyed it even more now with some life behind me (and teaching, which has really helpedd me read more critically, as if I needed to be more critical) and I was just amazed at how well done this book is and that it is so readable and so wortwhile all at once. I would just warn you, whoever you are, that it ends VERY sadly, of course I love that and everything but even I found it hard to take - still it was so worth it and really that was how it had to end - but anyway, super fantastic and everyone should read it (were it not for a mild smut factor I would require my students) - cannot imagine the movie at all compares ...
