*Book Club Pick For November* It's not fair of me to give this 3 stars. I want to give it 3 and 1/2, but that's not possible here. Ian McEwan read the book on tape--so we were sure to get every meaning behind his words. "On Chesil Beach" is beautifully constructed and carried out. It's just awkward, uncomfortable, and all other synonyms for those words. McEwan intentionally limited the amount of verbal interaction between Edward and Florence throughout the novel so that their confrontation at the end will have more impact. This is easily the most moving and affecting scene. A lot of times, I rate books based on their "recommendability." I'd have to say I'd have a hard time telling one of my customers to run out and read this book. Not for a lack of beauty and talent in the writing, but the mere subject matter is not one that will be open to mainstream appeal. I do have to say that, this being the 2nd McEwan book I've read, I would not hesitate to recommend his books to my customers. I just wouldn't start off with this one!
