A huge part of the reason why the Anne books don't hold much appeal for me as the series goes on is because L.M. Montgomery moves her heroine all across the island and introduces so many new characters that she has very little time to focus on the old ones. Avonlea is where the charm lies for me, not at Four Winds Harbor. I want to hear more about Marilla and Mrs. Rachel, not about Captain Jim and Miss Cornelia. And after having Anne spend so much of the series pining for Gilbert, the author doesn't examine their relationship at all once they're married. It leaves me sad and nostalgic. I wish I hadn't read any of the books beyond Anne of Green Gables.
