You cannot go wrong with McCullough. I loved learning about Mary Cassatt and saint-gaudens.
Douglass's story is not only inspirational, but very interesting to look at in terms of a persuasive piece for abolitionists. I read this twice in college, once for a history class and once for a lit class. I have considered teaching it along side Huck Finn giving a more balanced representation of slavery.
