It's a challenge to read a novel narrated by an individual you cannot empathize with on any level. While Adiga's protagonist is obviously intelligent, and trapped in a system of great inequity, his lack of remorse or guilt, absent of other psychological explanation, made him inaccessible.
I LOVE historical ghost stories, so I was a bit disappointed because this is really a drama where one person claims to have seen a ghost. There is no supernatural tension, no suspense. The novel has many characters and the author managed to give each one a distinctive personality. But I would have preferred a smaller cast of characters with a deeper exploration of their motivations and personal histories. The main character is a good mix of inner turmoil/redeeming qualities/small flaws. The author did a wonderful job of describing Cambridge, England, in the late 1700s: I felt like I was there. It is well-written, with a few plot twists I hadn't anticipated. A good read, but not a book I would read again.
