Plot Cecil and Jordan in New York by Gabrielle Bell is a collection of short stories about the quiet moments that change the characters' lives. The description of the book on Goodreads is a little bare. I thought that the short stories would all be related to Cecil and Jordan. However,the stories feature different characters. Cecil appeared in a couple of stories. It was a little confusing because I didn't know if the two Cecils were the same character. Thoughts Like any short story collection, there are some strong stories and some weaker ones. One of the stronger stories I realized I read before. The story Hit Me, which was also featured in the book Stuck in the Middle, demonstrated how a girl dealt with bullying. Another stronger story was Robot DJ, a story of a woman wanting to see her favorite rock band. Both stories showcased how we come to terms with growing up. While I enjoyed the dream-like story The Affliction, it felt out of place because of it's fantastical elements. I'm wondering if it is an older story; the illustration style deviates tremendously from the other stories. The title story also has fantastical elements, but the setting and tone is more in line with the collection. Roundup The book feels like 2 books stuck together: -Young people in the city learning to become adults - A memoir of a girl dealing with an unstable home and school bullying I would enjoy seeing both of these expanded into their own books. (And, holy cow. How many times did I use the word "story"?)
I loved this book. I wish this author would write more! It is about a secret...and how that secret affects a family and persons outside the family also. Good Book!
