I liked it - but god it took me ages to read! One from my University days when I was under the illusion that the only books worth reading were the great masterpieces that would contribute to my literary/intellectual/spiritual enrichment in some way. I am over that now.

It's hard to articulate why this book was a bit of a disappointment. I think I had a hard time with the suspension of disbelief required for "Callie" to accomplish her goals. I was also a bit irritated with how often the author mentioned how truly plain, "plump" and spinster-y Callie was. I'm grateful there wasn't an ugly duckling transformation, but the constant "remember, she's ordinary and has low self-esteem" drum-beating was annoying. That being said, I read 3/4 of the book in a single sitting because I decided not to put it down and go to bed. If the follow-up "10 ways to be adored..." falls into my lap, I'll probably read it.

An affirmation for adoption in many ways, althought that's not the actual plot. The character development for the girl whose mother succumbs to mental illness and the young woman who befriends her and takes her in are both well-done and touching. The author's ability to notice her characters, like the description of the progragonist's apartment really stuck with me. I'm noticing a trend about novels that celebrate friendship, that there's always a romantic relationship/red herring to help boost the sales. If you can get past that, this novel is worth the read.
