This is a lovely book for both young and old. It of course serves as the foundation of one of the great epics of literature The Lord of the Rings triolgy. Many of the character one meets in the pages of the greater work are here as well. The Hobbit introduces the reader to this cast of characters so strange and yet so famliar in a land filled with dark danger and awe inspiring beauty. It is a journey through great peril on a road to great adventure. That very road for the reader begins just inside the first paragraph and the road goes ever on and on.
