Very much a Kazuo Ishiguru novel. The beauty is in the details, in the descriptions, in the slow build and the heartbreaking moments, of which there are hundreds. I read this book knowing absolutely nothing about it, except who it was by. If possible, I'd recommend that everyone read it just like that. It's stunningly written with a beauty and restraint that few authors employ nowadays. Unlike so many books I've read lately, this book is revealed to the reader slowly, mysteriously, letting you speculate, wonder, figure out. It's like a walk through the countryside, lovely, sparse and just a bit too cool; like the moment your bath hits that temperature where it's almost too cool but it's still nice, just the slight edge of discomfort and even then, your not sure you feel it. And, of course, it's poignant, relevant, political, but the book doesn't take you there, you have to go there on your own. And you will. You won't be able to help it.
