** spoiler alert ** Beautiful writing, intriguing characters and a story line that draws you in immediately. I loved this book for that. It seems a little slow towards the end, and I have to say disappointing that not one person gets their happily ever after, but then again, perhaps that it is the point of writing a story about war and the effects on our lives. I did like the idea that we are all involved in each others story and we are here to listen and to help. I liked Dr. Hitch's final letter to his wife: "In fairy tales, my darling, the dead watch over the living. but right now, you are reading what I am writing and so we are together, here. It is no tale. I am right here, my pen on the paper scratching out your name, Emma Emma Emma. And oh, how I loved you, Emma. You were my home. But this is what I want to say--look up, right now. Take your eyes off this page, and look up. Miss James, I think, will be right near you. She will give you this letter and, from what I know, will wait for you to read it. She will wait. She will keep watch. And others, too. You are not alone. We are all around you, dead and living. Look up-- Will" Sorry for the spoiler (come on though, you knew Dr. Fitch was going to die!) but I needed this letter personally, and I needed Emma to hear those words too. Just look up!
