Wonderful book about process drama!
I don't think it was possible for this book to live up to my (overly high) expectations, but I was sad that it didn't. I grew frustrated that the narrative wandered into directions I didn't really care about, and away from the storylines that I did. The language is beautiful, though the overwrought descriptions can be wearying at times. The premise is weighty, certainly--more than enough for a fascinating, character-driven story. While I enjoy occasional novels that are as much about narrative structure as they are about plot or character, the characters and premise were so enticing that I wanted them to have a book of their own, rather than the book the author created for them.
I read this sequel just before I was hired as a teacher, which I remember because I was asked what I had read recently in my interview. I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first one, although it was still dark and had a lot of character development. For me, I just like Jerry's story better than this one. When I interviewed for my job at Leavitt, they asked what book I was reading and I talked about having just finished this one.
