I really, really enjoyed Hex Hall and I was excited for this follow up book. I was a little disappointed that we didn't get a little more background or character development or something. It was such a quick read and I just kept waiting for something to happen. Instead by the time a little action started we were left with a huge cliff hanger. That said it was entertaining and I'll obviously be looking forward to the next book to see how it all ends.
Adelia, the necromancer from the Mistress of Death has not been released from Henry II of England to return to her home at the School of Medicine in Salerno, Italy. She is caught up in the middle of a political upheaval between Henry II and his wife Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine and murders of consequence. The only thing I didn't like about this book is Adelia's constant whining about Rowley...the man she loves, but refused to marry, because "she is a Doctor, not a wife"...and now that he isn't paying attention to her, she can't stand it. The Adelia from the first book "Mistress in the Art of Death" was a stronger character than this.
Liked the beginning but the main story was a bit disappointing. Lincoln and Child can turn out some great thrillers together and separately but I thought this was a "B" thriller...similar to a "B" movie. Fast moving to a fault with many chases and action-filled scenes but lacks interesting characters that are not really developed enough to make you care.
Ladies, you have Got to read this book. I laughed. I cried. I felt anger. I felt joy. Most of all, I felt a sense of pride in knowing how hard women have struggled over the past few decades to push past the racial lines descibed in this story to become the best of friends and learn one important thing: we are all sisters in this universe. I sincerely hope that Ms. Stockett does a follow-up to this story. I would love to catch up on Minnie, Abilene and Skeeter's lives a decade after this story ends.
