** spoiler alert ** About Barb who is from NYC and now lives in a small town. She is recently divorced and her husband is well known in the small town. He has custody of the children and Barb is desperate to get them back. Her work, answering letters to a local ice cream manufacturer is dead end so Barb opens what she calls a cat house. She hires male college students to work the house and the women who come there lead to favors for Barb in the future. She finds a manuscript and thinks it may have been written by Nabokov who once lived in her house. It is missing a scene which she writes. Appraisers think the manuscript was not written by Nabokov but Barb succeeds anyway. Gets her children back and has a new guy.
I read this book in an afternoon. One thing about Spinelli is that his writing seems simple, but the themes and images in his writing are not. I really liked how he explores the differences between how others see us and how we see ourselves. I also thought he did a fabulous job capturing how kids are mean to each other.
Very interesting to read about recovery from a brain injury.
