I never read this book in school as a lot of my friends did, but I really enjoyed the way that Steinbeck used each scene to create a solid and quiet backdrop. The characters are wonderful and even in only a hundred pages there are many depths and layers that create a thick portrait of each; and it adds to the overall tenderness of the story. Even though it's a short and easy read, there's a lot to get carried away with, which is a testament to how well this book has been written.
