I last re-read this book about five years ago, so I'm not going to bother to post a real review; I only included this back-dated book in my list because I was surprised to see that some people didn't like it -- at all (i.e., one- and two-star review). I try to keep an open mind, and respect others' opinions ... but ... its hard for me to comprehend NOT liking Salinger. I felt compelled to come to his defense ...
This novel satisfied my appetite for family, romance and the secrets that families hold.
One of the most beautiful stories I've ever read. Growing up in Ireland with an abusive alcoholic father, a depressed mother, and little money to feed the family, you would expect McCourt's memoirs to be very sad. Yet somehow this novel could crack me up as quickly as it brought me to tears. Beautifully written, would definitely recommend.
