Gosh, of course, this broke my heart. It's the kind of book that entices many emotions: fear, anger, surprise, sadness. There were moments where I wanted to shake one or more of the characters when their actions just drove me nuts, but I'm sure that was a desirable reaction for the author. I don't think I can ever read it again, but I'm glad I did the first time.
